Selena Gomez & The Scene - A Year Without Rain (Deluxe Edition) (2010)

Thursday, September 30, 2010

What do you do after striking gold with your first solo album, wrapping your third season starring in a hit series and earning raves for your movie debut? If you're Selena Gomez, you dance. At least, you get the world on its feet with "A Year Without Rain." A follow-up to "Kiss & Tell," Selena’s gold-certified Hollywood Records debut CD, "A Year Without Rain" shows Selena and her band, The Scene, in a whole new light, this one pulsating, multicolored and ready for the mirrored ball. "I really wanted something that felt good to perform, but had a techno/dance vibe," Selena says. "I wanted something that had meaning and melody, and more empowering lyrics." That’s exactly what she delivers in "A Year Without Rain." Working with top producer/songwriters like Tim James & Antonina Armato, Kevin Rudolf, Toby Gad and Jonas Jeberg, Selena kept to a more quickened tempo, exploring themes of love, freedom and the joy of living for the moment.

Billy Currington - Enjoy Yourself (2010)

Billy Currington’s new album, Enjoy Yourself, is just what it claims to be, a collection of laid-back songs that are meant to put the listener in a positive mood. “It’s a good vibe album,” Currington explained. “I hope it’s one of those albums that someone can put in when they’re hanging out in their camp spot or they’re grilling out by their pool and just feel good through the whole thing.” Growing up, Currington was influenced by the wistful songs of Merle Haggard and George Strait but later discovered he preferred more upbeat music. “I don’t want to feel that way or make anyone else feel that way when they’re listening to my music. I want people to walk away feeling happy.”

Maroon 5 - Hands All Over (2010)

Soul-pop group Maroon 5 has always known its way around a huge pop hook, and rock super-producer Mutt Lange (Def Leppard, AC/DC) is no slouch himself. So the teaming of the two on Maroon 5's third album, "Hands All Over," yields predictably catchy results, sleekly packaged for maximum radio impact. Every one of the album's 12 tracks lands between the three- and four-minute mark, and any one of them could be a single. This kind of efficiency is not to be discounted: Maroon 5 knows its function, and that's to create hits. And several songs on "Hands All Over" sound like monsters: "Never Gonna Leave This Bed" is carefully restrained before it explodes into a gigantic sing-along chorus, and "How" mines the same mid-tempo ballad territory that Train hits on so well. "Hands All Over" may be pop music globalization, but it's hard to argue with the results.

1. Misery
2. Give a Little More
3. Stutter
4. Don’t Know Nothing
5. Never Gonna Leave This Bed
6. I Can’t Lie

Hell Razah - Heaven Razah (2010)

Handling spiritual and political themes with urgent poignancy, Brooklyn MC Hell Razah first enjoyed exposure in the mid- to late ‘90s comprising Wu-Tang Clan extended family member the Sunz of Man, who had moderate success with singles "Soldiers of Darkness" (1995) and the Earth, Wind, and Fire-assisted "Shining Star" (1998) from their Top 20 debut The Last Shall Be the First (1998). Hell Razah only made a few appearances on other Wu-Tang albums following Sunz of Man's debut (Ghostface Killah's acclaimed Supreme Clientele (2000) one of the few) before he went the solo route. With limited distribution, Razah's debut album When All Hell Breaks Loose arrived in 2001 on Echo International, though later the Brooklyn rapper teamed up with Wu-Tang producer 4th Disciple to deliver Freedom of Speech in 2004. Razah continued building his career on collaborations and formed the ominous, hardcore outfit Black Market Militia with Killah Priest, Tragedy Khadafi, Timbo King, and William Cooper. Nature Sounds, who issued that group's self-titled album in 2005, then offered Razah his first real album deal and helped line up underground heavy hitters like MF Doom, Talib Kweli, and Ras Kass for Razah's 2007 LP The Renaissance Child. A collaborative effort with production duo Blue Sky Black Death, entitled Razah's Ladder, was released via Babygrande later that same year.

Black Milk - Album Of The Year (2010)

Detroit producer and MC Black Milk always seemed much more honored than annoyed when his work was compared to that of the late J. Dilla, so don’t think the sonic surprises on this 2010 effort are driven by a desire to end the association. That said, Album of the Year is a distinct break from the smoky Detroit funk Dilla championed, as it pulls inspiration from the worlds of rock and funk-rock. A four-man live band is employed to provide the guitar crunch and acoustic drum fills, but instead of the organic Roots style, Milk cuts these recordings into a stuttering and loopy soundscape that’s entirely hip-hop. These block-rocking beats are irresistible and instantly gratifying as tracks like “Oh Girl” feel both new and comfortable on first listen, but thanks to the man’s growth as a lyricist, the album is also a rich experience that rewards on every return.

1. 365
2. Welcome (Gotta Go)
3. Keep Going
4. Oh Girl feat. AB
5. Deadly Medley feat. Royce Da 5′9″ and Elzhi

Eminem - Recovery (2010)

Eminem releases Recovery just over a year after his last album, 2009’s Relapse. Relapse put the cap on an impressive ten years of recorded output, and contributed to Eminem being the biggest selling artist of 2000-2009. In recognition of this, Neilsen SoundScan named him their Artist of the Decade. Relapse entered the charts at #1 and, at nearly double platinum, was the best selling rap album of last year. It also earned Eminem his 11th Grammy award, winning in the Best Rap Album category. Relapse’s first single, “Crack A Bottle” from Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent, soared to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Eminem’s second #1 after 2002’s “Lose Yourself”) and set a SoundScan record at the time of its release for opening week download sales (418,000). The album also spun off two other hits; the Top 10 “We Made You” and Top 20 “Beautiful.”

Ice Cube - I Am The West (2010)

As his popularity continues to grow through movies and television, Ice Cube remains committed to the foundation of his career: Hip-Hop music. Quick to emphasize that he is and always will be a B-Boy, dedicated to writing vivid rhymes, delivering stellar stage performances and making dope hip-hop records. I Am The West is poised to be another high point in that mission. Very few can make as bold a statement as I Am The West and even fewer can dispute Ice Cube's right to stake the claim. His hall of fame resume alone would be enough to own the title, but this album is an opportunity to raise the bar even higher. The hallmark of Ice Cube's best know work is ever present on I Am The West: Lyrics from a realistic perspective, giving voice to those usually ignored or shunned by the power base, rhymes that make you think and songs that set the party off. All supported with outstanding production that makes your head nod. And Ice Cube accomplishes this while thoroughly representing his unwavering commitment to the west coast hip-hop movement that he helped to start over twenty years ago.
