Elton John & Leon Russell - The Union (2010)

The Union marks the culmination of a mutual musical adoration that began in the late 1960s, ahead of Elton's debut US performance in 1970 at The Troubadour Club in Los Angeles. The album is a collaboration between Elton and Leon Russell, with songs by Elton and Bernie Taupin; by Elton, Bernie and Leon; by Elton and Leon and by Leon alone.

The Union was recorded in Los Angeles earlier this year, with guest musicians including Brian Wilson, Booker T, Don Was and Neil Young. Cameron Crowe has filmed the sessions for a documentary, creating too a moment of history as this is the first time that the genesis of Elton's music has been recorded on film. Critics who have had an early preview of the album are united in praise for the work that Elton describes as a "Seventies record with a modern feel."

Sufjan Stevens - The Age Of Adz (2010)

The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds) is Sufjan Stevens' first full-length collection of original songs since 2005's conceptual pop opus Illinois. While the sounds on this record are distinctly "artificial" (drums machines and analog synths reign supreme), the proclamations of the songs are unabashedly visceral, sung loudly, with a backdrop of insistent orchestration. The result is an album that is perhaps more vibrant, primary and explicit than anything Sufjan has done before, incorporating themes that are neither historical nor civic, but rather personal and primal (if even a little juvenile).

Matthew West - Story Of Your Life (2010)

For his new record, Matthew West did something unusual: He turned the microphone around. Rather than write about what he was experiencing in his life, he asked his fans to submit the stories of their lives. When he opened up this opportunity to his fans, the message spread quickly - and soon almost 10,000 stories were submitted. Radio stations, media outlets, and retailers caught the vision and helped spread the word of this unique album. The stories gave Matthew a window into what his fans had experienced in their lives. And they covered a wide range of human experiences and emotions. From joy to sorrow, struggle to victory, and life and death. The song "Family Tree" describes how Christ gives us a new identity and legacy and life, while "One Less' chronicles the joy of adoption and helping those most in need. "Broken Girl" tragically recounts the countless stories Matthew received about sexual abuse - and describes the healing and redemption that Christ promises. "My Own Little World" perhaps serves as a capstone to the entire album, describing a person who lived in their own "little world" and then was awakened to the bigger picture of need and God's work in the world.

Trae - Can't Ban Tha Truth (2010)

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

There has not been, nor will there be, a rap album from Houston this year as entangled in storylines and ramifications as Trae's Can't Ban Tha Truth. Not even if he somehow manages to release The Truth, the LP that was supposed to usher him into the national spotlight but was pushed aside as The Ban took hold of all of his attention. CBTT is considerably more than just an album taking shots at The Box - it is that, though. The Ban has effectively altered the trajectory of not only Trae's career, but also his entire outlook, which will have, and is already having, resounding effects on his music. This album represents that shift with a strange, unreserved enthusiasm. It is a marker in Houston hip-hop history.

Canibus - C Of Tranquility (2010)

Whenever discussing Canibus (the rapper of course), the opinions are polarized into two categories; the first one often recited is, “he weren’t meant to go commercial, he’s too intelligent for the mainstream,” and the second is, “he flopped and tried to blame everyone else for his failings.” These offerings refer to the period in the mid ’90s when the revered emcee was shutting down any and every appearance, verse and track he spat on. Great things were in store for the rapper but after a battle with LL Cool J, a disappointing debut album and various label worries, Canibus eventually disappeared into the underground circuit. Whilst the Canibus era never expanded past 1998, the fiery mic assassin continues to drop major science on various new releases, leading right up to his latest project C of Tranquility.

Skyzoo & Illmind - Live From The Tape Deck (2010)

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

Live from the Tape Deck, a collaboration between rapper Skyzoo and producer Illmind, is not only a throwback to classical values, but also a metaphor for “doing the right thing,” as several interludes derived from Spike Lee’s 1989 film reminds us. So in spite of being “critically acclaimed and underrated at the same time,” Skyzoo eschews industry gimmicks in favor of dense lyricism, from setting the proverbial “Kitchen Table” to tossing “Frisbees.” Illmind’s beats are reminiscent of Black Milk’s excellent Tronic, adding hardcore electronic bangers that enhance this purist hip-hop experience.

Guster - Easy Wonderful (2010)

Few would have predicted the evolution that Guster has undergone, but then, Adam Gardner, Ryan Miller, Brian Rosenworcel and Joe Pisapia have been quietly confounding expectations since Guster began recording 15 years ago. While critics scoffed that a "college band" with two acoustic guitars and some bongos could never amount to much, Guster steadily evolved into a group that creates smartly crafted guitar pop with ease. Many people might have dismissed them upon first impression years ago, but Guster is the rare artist that demands to be heard with new ears. And with their new album Easy Wonderful, the quartet has made a piece of art that rewards each listen. With the reflective opener "Architects and Engineers," the pop gem "Do You Love Me," the optimistic anthem "Bad Bad World," the wall of sound production of "What You Call Love" and the haunting ballad "Stay With Me Jesus," Guster have created the best album of their lives.

KT Tunstall - Tiger Suit (2010)

Sunday, October 3, 2010

KT Tunstall became famous playing rootsy acoustic pop, but she has created what she's calling "nature techno" for this inventive follow-up to 2007's Drastic Fantastic, which merges her raspy folk with free-spirited campfire rhythms. Opener Uummannaq captures this shift in style with simmering snake rattles, a tribal-cry hook and a thunderclap beat, which is taken up again on the pulsing dance chorus of Lost. Seasick Steve adds a broody hum of guitar on Golden Frames and there's a bluesy feel in the driven twang of Push That Knot Away. The sweetly reflective first single (Still a) Weirdo – and the uptempo, chime-sprinkled Fade Like a Shadow – affirm Tunstall's skill at penning catchy yet credible pop hits. It's introspective in places, but mostly Tiger Suit is fierce, claws-out fun.

Toby Keith - Bullets In The Gun (Deluxe Edition) (2010)

Bullets In The Gun, Keith’s 15th studio album, is a defining career milestone. But then, so have been each of his previous releases. And that’s the real point. Any attempt to explain, qualify or quantify Toby Keith that doesn’t start and end with the full breadth of his music is radically misdirected. For it is in his music – the art and craft of it and, just as significantly, the unwavering embrace of the audience – that we can best define a songwriter/performer now in his 18th consecutive year at the top of the charts. Appropriately, Bullets helps bring everything that has come before into clearer relief. Rarely credited for the adventurousness and diversity of his catalog, Keith has created his most astoundingly varied collection of songs and sounds yet. And as it always has for Toby, the process begins in the writing.

Surfer Blood - Astro Coast (2010)

There's plenty to like about Astro Coast, the debut LP from the youthful Floridians in Surfer Blood, but first and foremost it's a great guitar album. So what exactly does that mean these days? Often, it's a reference to either a display of astounding technical chops or innovative use of tone and texture, qualities which, to be quite honest, aren't particularly present here. This is a great guitar album in the way Weezer's Blue Album, Built to Spill's Keep It Like a Secret, or, more recently, Japandroids' Post-Nothing are: six-strings serve as a multiplier for hooks, making it every bit as easy and fun to air guitar with as it is to sing along to.

Group 1 Crew - Outta Space Love (2010)

Dove Award winner Group 1 Crew has been workin’ hard on Planet G1C preparing their tasty collection of hot beats, killer hooks and clever lyrics aptly named ‘Outta Space Love.’ It’s a collection of songs that draws the listener in with the irresistible urban grooves and substantive lyrics that have become Group 1 Crew’s calling card. It’s packed with songs that’ll be all over radio (first single ‘Walking on the Stars’ is already racing up the CHR charts) and throughout the film/TV world (‘Breakdown’ is already featured prominently on E! network’s ‘Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami’). ‘Outta Space Love’ also features the song ‘Beautiful’ which was a featured song on the 2009 Revolve Tour and will be the centerpiece of ‘Blanca’s Boutique,’ her blog at group1crew.com. Look for Group 1 Crew to push the envelope with this album as the music finds its way into places many CCM albums wouldn’t have a chance to thrive. Mark Ronson & The Business Intl - Record Collection (2010)

Friday, October 1, 2010

He failed to make a splash with his 2003 debut, Here Comes the Fuzz, but Mark Ronson broke through several years later. He charted with a few singles off his sophomore project, 2007's Version, and saw his production work reach the mainstream. In particular, he saw his stock rise when Amy Winehouse's Back to Black took hit it big with 2007 single "Rehab." From there, Ronson's résumé continued to grow as he began working on his third project, Record Collection. Like his previous efforts, he again looks to blend funk, electronica, hip-hop, and rock with a slew of guests, such as Q-Tip and MNDR, and bass-heavy beats.

Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns (2010)

Linkin Park began work on their fourth studio album back in 2008, a year after the
release of their radio-pandering & painfully mediocre Minutes to Midnight. The band had returned to producer Rick Rubin, whose Midas Touch has given innumerable bands the highlight albums of their careers, in the hopes that they could plant a new flag, start a new musical movement, create something bigger than the sound they boxed themselves into.

With A Thousand Suns, the band has certainly moved beyond the mediocre, but this is no revitalization. The album is a full-bodied leap in the direction of self-parodying melodrama and fashionable faux-revolution, rather than actual redemption through self-evolution. A grandly orchestrated mechanized mess of rage against the machine, the album is entirely unconvincing as a call to action for uprising and awareness. Not even Rubin can keep this from being a patronizingly flaccid mess.

Seal - 6: Commitment (2010)

Three-time Grammy Award-winner Seal re-teams with producer/arranger/songwriter David Foster for Seal 6: Commitment, the singer†s first album of all-new material since 2007s System. While that album was influenced by dance-pop, love and family are the inspiration for this albums title, so expect a more mature sound. Kenny Chesney - Hemingway's Whiskey (2010)

By now, Kenny Chesney fans pretty much know what to expect from him. With each new album comes songs with a nostalgic look back, party tunes sure to rile up the live audience, a tale or two about love gone awry, and a salute to the beach in one form or another.

The tunes on “Hemingway’s Whiskey,” all tick off the check list, but along with the usual fare, Chesney hits some career high notes, primarily with the exquisite “You and Tequila,” featuring Grace Potter of the Nocturnals. The gorgeous, wistful duet written by Deana Carter and Matraca Berg, deals with wrestling your demons. “You and Tequila make me crazy/run like poison in my blood/One more night could kill me/One is one too many/One more is never enough,” they sing, gently and sadly, resigned to their fate. It flows from the same open vein, although not as heartbreakingly, as the incomparable “Whiskey Lullaby” from Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss (written by Bill Anderson and Jon Randall).

Neil Young - Le Noise (2010)

It would be only natural for those already wary of Neil Young – of his position as grandaddy of Americana – to redouble their guard against his latest album. It is almost avant garde. There's Young, bereft of band, playing guitar, periodically ambushed by some woo-woo sound effects. That's it. Recorded over three successive full moons, Le Noise – Neil Young's 83rd album, give or take – refers to fellow Canadian Daniel Lanois, the producer(U2, Bob Dylan) enjoined by Young to help him make a solo acoustic album. It turned out mostly electric, befitting a man who was a hero to Kurt Cobain. It also turned out rather well.

Eric Clapton - Clapton (2010)

"This album wasn’t what it was intended to be at all," says Eric Clapton. "It’s actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It’s an eclectic collection of songs that weren’t really on the map—and I like it so much because if it’s a surprise to the fans, that’s only because it’s a surprise to me, as well."

On CLAPTON, his nineteenth solo album, the only person who has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three separate times explores the wide range of influences that helped to form his musical sensibility. From a glimmer of an idea—a wish to record some of the jazz standards that he grew up with alongside songs by his frequent collaborator and inspiration JJ Cale—Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.
